Aspen Campground

This campground is composed of four loops in alternating meadow and wooded areas. There are 148 total campsites and a camp host. It is large and rambling and offers several camping experiences and environments from grassy meadows to a rocky forest. For viewing there are many birds, squirrels, deer, and elk. Most sites are well separated for privacy. Firewood is available. Aspen Campground has paved roads

Just off Woods Canyon Lake turnoff, approximately 4 miles north of State Highway 260 at mile marker 282 on forest road 300, located directly across from the Rim Visitor Information Station.


Crook Campground

This group campground is situated in a tall ponderosa pine forest, approximately 3/4 of a mile from Woods Canyon Lake, which offers boating (electric motors only) and fishing opportunities. The Rim Lakes Vista Trail which provides spectacular views of the Mogollon Rim can be accessed by the Meadow Trail and is approximately 1/4 mile away.

To get here from Payson travel approximately 30 miles east on State Highway 260. When you top out on the rim, take the first Left onto FR 300 (located directly across the highway from the Rim Visitor Information Station) Travel about four miles north on the 300 Road. Turn Right onto FR 105 toward Woods Canyon Lake. Watch for signs for Crook Campground.


Mogollon Campground

Mogollon Campground, although not directly in the Woods Canyon Recreation area, sits just outside and is only two miles from the lake. For those who like spectacular views, this campground is one of the closest to the Mogollon Rim.

Mogollon Campground has 26 sites (of which sites 14 through 26 are available for advanced reservation). All sites are parallel parking and provide approximately 40 feet of parking space. Sites can accommodate tents as well as pop-up campers and small trailers or motorhomes.

Located off of the Woods Canyon Lake turnoff on Road 300 approximately 5 miles off of Highway 260.

Rim Campground

Rim Campground has 26 sites (of which sites 14 through 26 are available for advanced reservation). All sites provide approximately 40 feet of parallel parking (no spurs). Sites can accommodate tents as well as pop-up campers and short trailers and motorhomes. Located on Road 300 approximately 1 mile off of High 260 on the Woods Canyon Lake turnoff.

Rim Campground is surrounded by ponderosa pines and located in an area that is relatively flat. The area is frequented by deer and elk but visitors occasionally catch a glimpse of black bear. Fishing and boating are available at Woods Canyon Lake which is approximately 3 miles from the campground.

Spillway Campground is set among the ponderosa pine, oak and Douglas fir. Woods Canyon Lake offers boating (electric trolling motors only) and fishing opportunities. Woods Canyon Lake loop trail is passes adjacent to the campground. Tents, trailers and small motorhomes up to 16 foot are allowed.

Adjacent to Woods Canyon Lake, approximately 5 miles north of State Highway 260 on Forest Road 300. Forest Road 300 is located directly across from the Rim Visitor Information Station.

Woods Canyon Group Campground is located a short walking distance from Woods Canyon Lake. Woods Canyon Lake is a scenic 52 acre lake surrounded by Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and oak. Woods Canyon Lake offers boating (electric trolling motors only) and fishing opportunities. Interpretative nature trail at the north end of lake. The campground is situated in ponderosa pine, oak, aspen, and Douglas fir.

This group site is located near Woods Canyon Lake, approximately 5 miles north of State Highway 260 Take Forest Road 300 to Forest Road 105. Forest Road 300 is located directly across from the Rim Visitor Information Station

Sinkhole Campground

Located in the ponderosa pine forest, this campground is within walking distance of Willow Springs Lake which provides boating and fishing opportunities. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities are nearby in the non-motorized Wildlife Area. Fishing and boating are available at nearby Willow Springs Lake which is approximately one mile from the campground.

Sinkhole Campground has 26 sites (sites 14 through 26 are available for advanced reservation). Sites 1 through 13 are first-come, first served. There are two accessible sites, two double sites and the rest are single sites. Sinkhole Campground is located on Willow Springs Lake Road (Forest Road 149) approximately 1/2 mile off of Highway 260.


Bear Canyon Campground

Bear Canyon is a beautiful, narrow, canyon-bound lake, accessible by foot trail only, Bear Canyon Lake is one of several in a series of  fishing lakes built by Arizona Game and Fish Department. Despite being several miles down a dirt road and having few amenities, it draws many visitors. The partially developed Bear Canyon campground which is set among the mixed conifer, oak and aspen, has only limited amenities. Bear Canyon Lake is a "Pack it in - Pack it out" area.

Located just off Bear Canyon Lake, approximately 14 miles northwest of State Highway 260 on Forest Road 89. Forest Road 89 is accessed via Forest Road 300 which is located directly across from the Rim Visitor Information Station.


Black Canyon Rim Campground

Black Canyon Rim Campground, set among towering ponderosa pine, is a favorite stopping place for those traveling on the General Crook National Recreation Trail. Fishing and boating (electric motors only) opportunities are popular at Black Canyon Lake which is located 3 miles northeast along Forest Road 86. Each campsite offers a campfire ring with grill and picnic table. Additional amenities include accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash service. Access is on both sand and gravel roads. A campground host is available at the site.

Approximately 3 miles south of the junction of State Highway 260 and Forest Road 300. Access the campground off Forest Road 300 via Forest Road 86.

Canyon Point Campground

Hikers enjoy staying at Canyon Point because of its access to trails to the Sinkhole and the edge of the Mogollon Rim, which offers a spectacular view. Its proximity to Willow Springs Lake also draws boaters and anglers. Families who stay on the weekends often attend educational programs given by Forest Service rangers and forest naturalists at the facility's amphitheater.

Canyon Point has 113 camping units including 32 units with electrical hook-ups. Tents, trailers, and motor homes up to 75 foot are welcome at the campground. For those who need it, three family units are universally accessible. Five double sites are available and can accommodate up to 16 people each. The small group campsite can accommodate up to 25 people and a large group site available for large groups up to 55 people.

The entrance is located on State Highway 260 approximately 4.5 miles east of the Rim Visitor Information Station.


Colcord Ridge Dispersed Camping Area

Situated within a mixed forest of Ponderosa pine, white and Douglas fir, Colcord Ridge is a great place to go during the hot summer months. Trout fishing is available -- 5 miles to the east of Canyon Creek Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery -- 5 miles east on FR 33. Wildlife includes black bear, elk, mountain lion, javelina and deer. This site is a great camp site for youth first learning how to camp.

From Payson, travel 33 miles east on paved State Hwy. 260. Turn right on unpaved Young Road/Forest Road (FR) 512 and continue 3miles to Forest Road 33 (unpaved). Turn left on FR 33 and travel 4 1/2 miles to the site.


Kehl Springs Campground

Kehl Springs Camp is located in a stand of ponderosa pines right at the brink of the Mogollon Rim. Just a short distance from these shady campsites the rim brings the Colorado Plateau to an endwith a precipitous drop-off that plunges two thousand feet from forested highland to Sonoran desert. From this high perspective you can enjoy spectacular views of Four Peaks, the Sierra Anchas, and the Mazatzals. At night, the lights of Payson wink up from 2,000 feet down and 15 miles away. Other recreation activities to enjoy nearby include hiking, mountain biking, fishing and boating

To get here from Payson, travel north on AZ-260 W/AZ-87 N for approximately 28 miles. Turn left on Fr 300 (Rim Rd) and travel for 6 miles. Campground will be on the right hand side.

Knoll Lake Campground

This secluded forest camp offers easy access to two features of high visitor interest.

The first is Knoll Lake, a medium-sized body of water tucked away in a picturesque setting. People come here to fish for trout and tour the lake in small boats. The area around Knoll Lake is also home of some of the Rim's most magnificent views. It provides a scenic setting for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or just sitting back and enjoying the panorama.

The campground has about 30 campsites situated under a ponderosa grove near Knoll Lake. Sites can accommodate tents, pop-up campers, trailers, and small motorhomes. Each campsite offers a campfire ring, grill and picnic table. Additional amenities include accessible vault toilets and drinking water are available. A camp host is available at the site.

To get here from Payson, travel east on Hwy 260, turn left on Rim Rd (Fr 300) across from the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center. Continue down Fr 300 for approximately 20 miles, turn left and go 4 miles to Fr 295e. Follow signs and drive to campground.


Alderwood Campground

Alderwood Campground is on Haigler Creek. The water-chiseled canyon is popular for trout fishing and its swimming holes. This moderately-used campground is appreciated for its solitude. This campground is well-shaded and offers recreation opportunities for the whole family.

To get here from Payson, travel east for 24 miles on paved State Hwy. 260. Turn right on Colcord Road 291 and travel 3 miles to FR 200. Turn right on unpaved FR 200. Travel on FR 200 for 6 miles, through Haigler Canyon Recreation Site to FR 202A. Turn right and follow this unpaved road for ½ mile to the site.


Haigler Canyon Campground and Day Use

This campground was constructed in 2007 and offers 2 day-use sites and 2 campground areas with 14 overnight sites. This campground boasts a diversity of trees. Fishing for rainbow trout is a popular pastime here. The stream is periodically stocked with trout April through late August. The chiseled canyons offer swimming holes.

To get here rom Payson, travel east for 24 miles on State Hwy 260. Turn right on Colcord Road  291 and travel 3 miles to FR 200. Turn right on unpaved FR 200. Travel on FR 200 for 6 miles, through Haigler Canyon Recreation Site to FR 202A. Turn right and follow this unpaved road for ½ mile to the site.

Blue Ridge Campground

Blue Ridge/C.C. Cragin Reservoir Area

Blue Ridge Campground is located about 5 miles north of Blue Ridge Reservoir, as the crow flies. It is about 10 miles by road. This narrow, winding body of water looks more like a canyon-bound river than a lake. Nestled between forested canyon walls it provides picturesque water recreation in a secluded, wooded setting. If fishing is your cup of tea, you can catch rainbow, brown or brook trout here. There's plenty to do for everyone, including sightseeing, wildlife watching, hiking, and mountain biking available here in these canyon-carved uplands.

The campground is a nice and well-maintained site that includes 10 designated sites with tables, fire rings, and cooking grills. Drinking water and vault toilets are available. Blue Ridge Campground is located off of Forest Road 138, approximately one mile east (or south) of State Highway 87 (mile post 298.8). 


Rock Crossing Campground

Rock Crossing Campground is located 2 miles from Blue Ridge Reservoir (also known as C.C. Cragin Reservoir). This narrow, winding body of water looks more like a canyon-bound river than a lake. The campground includes 33 single unit sites, 2 double sites, with picnic tables, fire rings, and cooking grills. Drinking water and vault toilets are available.


Chevelon Crossing Campground

Chevelon Crossing is a scenic and historic canyon area. Built originally by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, the campground is situated along Chevelon Creek. This campground is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The campground has seven campsites with picnic tables and fire pits. Chevelon Canyon offers spectacular views and opportunities for hiking and fishing. Tent camping, Picnic tables, and vault toilets are available.

The campground is a fishing area with a picnic ground situated in a mixture of ponderosa pine, juniper and pinyon pine. 

Chevelon Canyon offers spectacular views and opportunities for hiking and fishing. This remote campsite on Chevelon lake has several campsites with fire rings. There is a vault toilet with no drinking water available.


Clints Well Campground

Campsites at Clints Well are tucked away in a stand of tall, old growth ponderosas a short distance off the highway. Since access is so convenient, the area is open year-round although after winter storms the campground and surrounding roads may become impassable and are occasionally closed.

Tents, motor homes and trailers under 22' are permitted. There are 7 single unit sites with tables and cooking grills, Toilets (vault type)


Verde Glen Campground

Verde Glen is a popular site on the Payson Ranger District for Trout Fishing and other water activities. During the summer months, Verde Glen is a fun escape for kids and parents. Please keep in mind that fishing must be done with an up-to-date license and that there are NO lifeguards.

There are no designated camp sites, drinking water, toilets, or trash services. If you are staying overnight you must come equipped with a portable toilet or use a self-contained vehicle. Everything you bring in with you, must be packed out. Camping is NOT recommended. Travel on the Houston Mesa Road for 10 miles to the end of the pavement to the junction of FR 64. Turn right (east) and travel 1/2 mile to the site located on the north side of the road.

Workman Creek

3 Camping Sites, Creekside, Cascade and Falls. Then there is dispersed camping above Workman Creek Falls. Please check with the Payson Ranger District for the current status of the campground as it has been closed.

Below the waterfall, Workman Creek is stocked twice a year during the early part of summer. Above the falls, the creek supports a small naturally-reproducing population of rainbow trout. There are no native fish found in Workman Creek at this time. Most fishing activity takes place between State Hwy. 288 and Workman Creek Falls.

Houston Mesa Campground is located in the forested northern section of Tonto National Forest, just one mile north of Payson, Arizona and less than two hours from Phoenix. With family, equestrian and tent-only campsites, this campground can accommodate a range of visitors and offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors, including several miles of hiking and horseback riding trails nearby. As the fifth largest forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest is one of the most-visited "urban" forests in the United States (approximately 5.8 million visitors annually). Its boundaries are Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian reservations to the east. 


Christopher Creek Campground

With an elevation over a mile-high (5640 ft), Christopher Creek Campground's crisp, fresh air and vibrant views are a joy to behold. The facility is tucked along the banks of the spring-fed Christopher Creek, which passes just below the Mogollon Rim.  The family-friendly campground has 43 sites on both sides of the creek, plus a group site that accommodates a maximum of 25 people. 


Airplane Flat Campground

Airplane Flat campground is made of about 12 dispersed units arranged in a loop and set in an open stand of mature Ponderosa pine. A vault toilet is available but there is no water or trash bins. Nearby Canyon Creek is known for its trout fishing. Arizona Game & Fish Department Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery has self-guided tours. Wildlife includes: Abert squirrel, black bear, mountain lion, elk, turkey and deer.

From Payson, travel 33 miles east on Hwy 260. Turn right on Young Road/Forest Road 512 and continue for 3 miles to Forest Road 33. Turn left on FR 33 (unpaved) and travel 4 1/2 miles to the site.

Horton Day Use Site & Upper Tonto Creek Campgrounds; 6 picnic units and 9 camp units with picnic tables, grills and vault toilets. Drinking water available at Upper Tonto Creek Campground.

Travel 17 miles east of Payson on State Hwy. 260. Just east of Mile Marker #269 at Kohl’s Ranch, turn left (north) on Forest Road (FR) 289. Travel one mile north to these sites. Hike upstream.


Ponderosa Campground

Named for the towering pines under which it sits, Ponderosa Campground is tucked in the rolling forests of northern Arizona. The facility provides 48 single campsites and two group sites that can accommodate up to 50 people guests each. The campsites are clean, flat and spacious with a good amount of shade from pine trees.

To get here from Payson, Arizona, go east on State Route 260. The campground is located on the south side of 260. A campground sign is visible before the campground entrance.


Sharp Creek

Sharp Creek sits at a cool 6,000 feet elevation, perfect for escaping the desert heat of southern Arizona and getting away to shaded forests and refreshing creeks and lakes. It is surrounded by a thick ponderosa pine forest below the Mogollon Rim. The clear waters of Christopher Creek are less than a mile away. 

 Sharp Creek is a small campground with 20 campsites conveniently spread out into four loops. Campsites are spacious, comfortable and well-maintained, with some shade. Each has a picnic table, grill, campfire ring and lantern holder. One loop contains three group campsites that can each accommodate 50 to 75 people. A group picnic shelter is available as well. A dump station is located at nearby Ponderosa Campground.

This facility is located 23 miles northeast of Payson, Arizona, approximately 1.5 miles east of Christopher Creek. From Payson, take Highway 260 east for 23 miles. The campground is on the south side of Highway 260.

Upper Tonto Creek Campground

The union of Tonto and Horton Creeks is at the north end of the campground. Fishing in both creeks is a popular sport. The trailheads for Horton Creek Trail 285 and Derrick Trail 33 are located in the campground. Both of these trails access the Highline National Recreation Trail (#31). Tonto Fish Hatchery is four miles north of Highway 260 on Forest Road 289. The Arizona Game & Fish Department welcomes visitors and has a self-guided tour of the hatchery

 To get here from Payson, travel 16 miles east on State Hwy. 260. Just east of mile marker 268 at Kohl’s Ranch, turn left (north) on Forest Road (FR) 289. Travel one mile and turn right into the site


Upper Canyon Creek Dispersed Camping Area

The campground of dispersed units is set in a mature stand of Ponderosa pine with a mix of white and Douglas fir. The Arizona Game & Fish Department Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery is nearby. The hatchery is open to the public and offers a self-guided tour of the facility. Canyon Creek is popular among anglers fishing for rainbow trout. Wildlife includes: Abert squirrel, black bear.
