Black Canyon Lake and Black Canyon Rim Campground are both located atop the Mogollon Rim off of highway 260 just outside of Forest Lakes, Arizona.
BLACK CANYON LAKE
Black Canyon Lake is located on top of the Mogollon Rim off Highway 260 about 44 miles from downtown Payson. To get to this lake take Highway 260 up the Rim and turn right on Forest Road 300 for 2.5 miles. Then turn left on Black Canyon Road to reach the main lake boat ramp. The last 5 miles off of Highway 260 is a dirt road. This forest fishing lake as a surface area of 78 acres when full and is stocked by the Arizona Game and Fish Department with catchable size rainbow trout. The stocking schedule is located at the Arizona Game and Fish website. The lake also has sizeable populations of largemouth bass and sunfish. Boat use is restricted to electric motors only. This lake has plenty of shore access making fishing from shore easy. Trout here are caught on a variety of flies and lures as well as any number of standard trout baits.
BLACK CANYON RIM CAMPGROUND
Black Canyon Rim Campground, set among towering ponderosa pine, is a favorite stopping place for those traveling on the General Crook National Recreation Trail. Fishing and boating (electric motors only) opportunities are popular at Black Canyon Lake which is located 3 miles northeast along Forest Road 86.
Each campsite offers a campfire ring with grill and picnic table. Additional amenities include accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash service. Access is on both sand and gravel roads. A campground host is available at the site. Approximately 3 miles south of the junction of State Highway 260 and Forest Road 300. Access the campground off Forest Road 300 via Forest Road 86.
DISPERSED CAMPING NEAR BLACK CANYON LAKE
There is also opportunity for dispersed camping throughout the forest near Black Canyon Lake. Most of this is located along the dirt road between highway 260 and the lake. Some of the areas will have established fire pits but please check with the ranger station on fire restrictions.
REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITIES NEAR BLACK CANYON LAKE
There are no homes right near the lake as it is all national forest. The closest homes and cabins are in forest lakes which is on highway 260 just west of the Black Canyon Lake turnoff. Young, Arizona and Heber/Overguard, Arizona would be other options, but they are located much further from the lake than Forest Lakes. There are also opportunities just below the Rim in Christopher Creek and the surrounding area. if you do not want to go all the way down to Payson, Arizona.
